Wagga City Council have opened up submissions to artists with a connection to the Riverina in the hopes of producing a new mural for the main street.

"It's all about activating and enhancing our public spaces, and giving the community an opportunity to engage with meaningful public, contemporary art," council's visitor economy and events coordinator Fiona Hamilton said.

The mural will be funded as part of the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment's Places to Love program, with an additional focus of deterring graffiti and vandalism.

Ms Hamilton said expressions of interest were now being taken from experienced artists.

"Entries will be evaluated against certain criteria, considering their artistic merits, experience, design and connection to the region," she said.

With the mural set to be located on the corner of Tompson and Baylis streets, council hopes to see work begin in November.

"We would love to have the muralist painting when Artstate is on here, so that's the ideal goal but it all depends on the artist's availability," Ms Hamilton said.

Submissions close on September 23.
