The day after the Goannas lost to Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong in this year's elimination final, Rowe was on the phone to Ambler about coming aboard for next year, when MCUE will look to claim its first senior title since 1993.
Rowe was keen for Ambler to play this season, but the 23-year-old was keen to take a break from his hectic sports schedule after three seasons with Charles Sturt University.
He says the time off has reinvigorated him to the point where he can't wait for the 2021 season to start.
"My footy had been struggling a bit, I haven't been finding the groove and I think the change will help," Ambler said.
"With the Bushpigs not playing he (Rowe) asked if I wanted a run. I told him I'm honestly looking forward to the break and it's been the best thing for me, it's got me back into the mindset of wanting to play footy."
Ambler was an assistant coach and co-captain at CSU, but is likely to focus solely on playing in 2021.
"I did love the responsibility I had there, but my footy was lacking possibly because of that as well," he said.
"I wasn't focusing on my footy, and was thinking more about the players.
"I've won a premiership with Rowey in cricket and it's the way he goes about it as well. He's a guy you look up to when he speaks to the group, and is very respected among all the Mango fellas."
A Collingullie-Glenfield Park junior, Ambler said it will be surreal playing the Demons.
"I spoke to Brett (Somerville, Demons coach) and he was fine," Ambler said.
"It was a very hard decision to play against my home club when I've won two premierships there."
