Students from four high schools from around the Riverina went head-to-head in a virtual coding showdown last week, with Mater Dei taking the top title in the advanced category.
"It's not easy thinking like a computer," said 15-year-old Samuel Culley from Mater Dei.
"Writing in Python [coding software] is not like writing an essay."
The program is the brainchild of The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC) teacher Isaac Mannion along with CSU and has been running now for two years.
TRAC won the beginners division, while their all-girls team of advanced coders came third.
"It's a male-dominated field, even our Friday STEM sessions, there are more boys than girls," said 16-year-old TRAC student Amelia Mathews.
"It's a challenge, but that's something I like. It's good to have a new skill."
