Hanwood came from 3-0 down to deny Tumut their second win of the season with a 3-3 draw.
But there could be an even bigger cost for the defending champions with star striker Daniel Johnson red-carded during the win.
Johnson was given his marching orders after Michael Cimador scored his second for Hanwood to level the scores at 3-3. Johnson tried to quickly retrieve the ball to return to half-way, which caused a minor altercation.
It now looks set to cost him a finals appearance with Hanwood enjoying the bye in the final rescheduled round.
Hanwood coach Anthony Agresta could not believe Johnson was shown a red card.
"I'm bewildered. To me it's passion, we're chasing the game and now we've got a guy who is going to miss a potential semi-final," Agresta said.
Hanwood finished the game with nine men after Jordan Beltrame was given a second yellow card at the end of the game for comments to the referee.
It came after a Cimador double helped Hanwood salvage a draw against a spirited Tumut outfit.
Tumut exploded out of the gates and had three goals in the back of the net after 30 minutes, through two to William Goode and another to Jason Goode.
Agresta conceded the result was most likely going to cost his team a top-two finish but paid tribute to the eighth-placed Tumut side.
"It could cost us a double chance but we were our own worst enemy today," he said.
"We started a bit on the back foot and I said it during the week, Tumut, they are a good little side and I don't think the results this year have shown the sort of team they are. We were probably a bit stand-offish, gave them too much room and they're a good little side, they move the ball around pretty well and they made us pay. Some sloppy mistakes and we find ourselves 3-0 down after 25 minutes.
"It was a good effort to come back and draw, and at the end of the day we probably created enough chances to win the game.
"Our discipline, too, we ended up with two guys sent off which doesn't help either."
