A cool, calm and collected Patrick Hislop made the most of a one-on-one with the keeper late in the contest to hand the Lions the all-important three points at Rawlings Park.
The result means Young take Lake Albert's place inside the top four and sets up a huge final round showdown with Tolland next Sunday, where the winner will advance to finals.
Young coach Mark Mellish was pleased to see his team back inside the top four, where they had been for most of the year until last week's controversial decision to strip Henwood Park of their win over Lake Albert.
"It put me a little off guard as to the permutations of that (decision) and I just thought we've got to go back to what we're doing, playing football. Don't worry about the table, if we keep winning that's all that matters," Mellish said.
Both Young and Lake Albert had their chances throughout a relatively even contest, but it was the Lions who looked the more dangerous when going forward.
Just when it looked as if the game was headed for a draw, a result both teams are very familiar with this season, Hislop made the most of his opportunity and found the back of the net.
Mellish said with their season on the line, it was a big relief.
"It was because they had a couple of really good chances here early and I thought one is going to go in against the run of play," he said.
"Lake Albert, every time we play them it's a good game, we've had some really good stoushes against them and it's always difficult. It's one of those games where we could have half chances, but when we get those full chances we need to take them and credit to Patty. He kept his head there."
Mellish believes his team is starting to get things right at the business end of the season.
"I thought we played really well. We've been working really hard on moving the ball and getting quick, good movement off the ball and we did that today," he said.
"We've had in the first part of the season, we were a bit disjointed and I think we were trying to play long ball, quick ball, or get balls to certain players and bang, let them do the work. Whereas now, everyone put a shift in today.
"Maybe it was a bit disappointing in the first half we didn't quite release the ball as quickly, a couple of players, but I had a chat to them at half-time and said look, our task is the same thing, get the outlets, get the balls to where we have to go, don't take too much touches and it's good. We got a good result."
Young, now find themselves in third spot, and will only need a draw against Tolland next week to qualify for Pascoe Cup finals.
