The Wagga side lead Young 10-6 at half-time in the elimination final clash at Equex Centre on Saturday but could't go with their rivals after a fast start to the second stanza.
Young scored three tries in the first 10 minutes after the break as things unravelled for Brothers.
Breust admitted it was a disappointing end to what shaped as another promising season.
"It was probably the most disappointing 40 minutes we have put together all season," Breust said.
"It is disappointing as we were up at half-time then come out in the second half and it was a change of fortune.
"Young took their opportunities in the end, and in the second half they played brilliant, but we probably couldn't have played much worse."
It is the third time in as many seasons Brothers have failed to win a final, after ending an eight-year finals wait in 2018.
However Breust doesn't believe in any hoodoo, instead he again rued an unfortunate run with injuries.
"I'm definitely proud of the boys and they definitely dug deep as we had some horrible injuries once again," he said. "It is a disappointing end to something that could have been better."
While Brothers welcomed back Aaron Wynne for the clash with Young they lost James Morgan to a hamstring complaint.
Coupled with Liam Carey's season finishing after their win over Young a month ago, Breust thought it proved too big of an obstacle to overcome.
Brothers also lost their reserve grade final after only fielding 12 men against Southcity on Saturday.
Breust is yet to discuss with the club their plans for 2020 however would like the opportunity to lead the side in a full season after the COVID interruption.
"I'll sit down with the club and go from there," he said.
"It was a shortened season this year so I would love to get a crack at a full season, with a proper pre-season but it is what it is."
