Both Pearson Street and Dobney Avenue have gained the reputation as pothole-plagued roads that has drawn the ire of road-users.
Wagga City Council's operations director Warren Faulkner said the council intends to nominate both the roads for an upcoming state government grants program, which could provide the cash required to get the projects moving forward.
Mr Faulkner said the focus of the council has been identifying sub-arterial roads within the city and bringing them up to standard.
"I acknowledge there are others around the city, but (Pearson Street and Dobney Avenue) in particular are identified in being high volume, high freight routes," he said.
"The funding sources don't allow us to do everything at once so it's about where the priorities are."
Depending on the council's success in the state's fixing local roads program, he said that residents could expect construction to begin in early 2022.
In the meantime, Mr Faulkner said there will be a report presented to the city's councillors at Monday night's meeting looking to reclassify Pearson Street - along with Glenfield Road - from local to regional roads.
"If it gets reclassified then we can use state government contributions in maintenance and improvements," he said," he said.
In other news:
The council's road network has 178 kilometres classified as regional, where it receives a contribution of $1.9 million each year for its maintenance.
A Dobney Avenue business owner Rex Smith said that despite the efforts to keep both roads in good shape, it is due for an upgrade with traffic volumes constantly on the rise.
"There are plenty of potholes, which (the council) come in and fix, but get ripped up pretty quick," he said.
"You can't stop the traffic and Wagga is just getting so busy now. The amount of traffic that goes up Pearson Street at all hours is amazing.
"It could do with an upgrade."
