But in 2020, Uranquinty Diamonds are riding a wave of enjoyment, not disappointment, in the under 12s division one competition at Wagga Netball.
With one round to play before the top two teams meet in grand finals, the Diamonds are unbeaten, although their last two wins have been their closest encounters (seven-goal victories against Shooting Stars Diamonds and Nixons Thunderbirds).
Uranquinty coach Dorothy Vearing said they haven't focussed on the grand final.
"It's been a lovely season, even though it's been shorter. It's just about getting on the court," Vearing said.
"The Wagga associaton has done such a good job in making it possible. It's a credit to them. So it's just been a bonus for the girls to get on the court."
The well-rounded Diamonds have been led by Isabel Jones in centre, Sophie Thomas and Indi Rynehart in attack and Sadie Pankhurst in defence.
"I think it's because they're so versatile," Vearing said of the successful season. "We've got really strong attack and defence and centre court so the girls can be moved around anywhere. I'm very lucky that way."
As well as title deciders for the top two, Wagga Netball is exploring giving all teams a game on grand final day.
