Mooney, a talented sportsman, has been named at full-forward for Mater Dei's opening Carroll Cup clash against The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC) on Wednesday.
Mooney has begun to focus on his promising rugby union career but has showed how damaging he can be as a forward at senior level for Marrar in the past, as well as previous Carroll Cup competitions.
Irvine said Mater Dei will look to deliver him as much ball as possible this series.
"In the 15 minute halves, we're hoping to get Nathanael enough footy that we can kick a score, and Angus Curry down there as well," Irvine said.
"Our team is a lot more experienced in Carroll Cup than the group we had last year. I think we only had six boys that played Carroll Cup last year, whereas most of these guys have played Carroll Cup before, but we've still got a few young guys who are coming in."
Irvine hopes to get a good gauge on his team against TRAC, who he expects to be the benchmark.
"We think they should be (the benchmark). We probably weren't expected to beat them last year and go through to the final but played well enough to," he said.
"We'll be expecting them to be strong again this year, not only have they won the 15s in each year but they've gone on to win the state final the last three years so they've got some good footballers.
"We've played them in a couple of those 15s finals and not been too far away either so hopefully now a few of our boys are bigger and stronger than they were back then, we can match it with them a bit better."
