The decision on that wasn't sitting well with Hanwood coach Anthony Agresta at full time.
"Mate that was a poor call I'm sorry it just was," he said.
"The boys worked their socks off, and to cop a decision like that is poor."
The day didn't start on the right foot for Hanwood after they lost Sevi Tropea in the warm-up after he hyperextended his knee and joined Michael Andreazza on the sideline after the midfielder rolled his ankle at training on Thursday.
In a tightly contested start to the game United were the stronger of the two sides with Freddy Gardner having a shot cleared off the line by Michael Musitano before Gardner was called back for offside after getting to a ball over the top from Conor Edenden.
Hanwood's first clear cut chance fell to Jordan Bellato who got in behind the Leeton defence but couldn't get his shot down.
Chaise Donetto launched a powerful shot on target which was well saved by Jarrod Sillis before the Gardner brothers combined with the ball ending up in the back of the net however play was called back for offside.
It was an end to end start to the second half with both sides having chances to break the deadlock before a free kick on the edge of the box gave the Hanwood side a golden opportunity.
Nathan Battocchio stepped up behind the ball and struck it well to find the top corner and give Hanwood the lead with 62 minutes played.
Leeton started to push back, and after a Conor Edenden goal ruled out for offside, controversy struck with the awarding of an 86th-minute spot-kick.
It was judged that Jeylan Gatto had used his hand to prevent a goal being scored and so up stepped Adam Raso to try and pull Leeton back level.
Raso found the back of the net before being called back for encroachment from a Leeton attacker and made no mistake from the retake.
With little time remaining neither side were able to make a late impression with the points split at 1-1.
While the result didn't go the way Agresta was hoping it would he was happy to see members of his midfield make the step forward, he asked for before the game.
"We talked about it on Thursday night, we were pretty poor at training, in fact, the reserve graders beat us in a scratch match, and we were pretty poor and just needed some leadership," he said.
"We lost Brad (Clark), and we lost a lot of our senior leadership from last year, and I put it on a few guys during the week and today before the game, and they stood up today.
"Dem (Torino) and Chimo (Michael Cimador) in the middle of the park were fantastic, and that is why it is a bit frustrating to have that result taken away from us."
