Junee's John Foord was named volunteer and senior volunteer of the year, in a ceremony via video call on Tuesday, for his many years of charity work.
The farmer founded OzHarvest Wagga eight years ago in a bid to reduce food waste in the region and also heads up the Junee Community Open Kitchen.
Mr Foord said it was "humbling" to receive the award.
"It's a bit hard to get your head around, there are so many magnificent volunteers," he said.
Among the award winners was Karen Murray of Wagga, who set up the Kildare Bushfire Donation and Collection Centre to coordinate and distribute donations for victims of the fires in the Snowy Valleys.
Ms Murray said she felt "conflicted" to receive the award after witnessing the "massive community effort" of more than 160 volunteers and many more across Wagga who responded immediately to any calls for assistance.
"I was just one person, part of a really big team," she said.
"Every time I put up a post saying we needed deodorant or hand sanitiser, within an hour it'd be there."
Ms Murray, who has also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and the hospital family room, said she decided to use her free time when her children left home to help others.

The young volunteer award winner this year is 10-year-old Ariba Omar, who has spent much of her life fundraising through various platforms since she was about four years old.
Miss Omar said she was "very excited and happy, also a bit nervous" to receive the award and she enjoyed volunteering to build her skills and confidence. "I love it because you get to meet new people," she said.
Miss Omar said one of the highlights of her volunteering was with the Cancer Council, as she is hoping one day to become a cancer specialist and be involved with the research her fundraising was supporting.
The Pleasant Hills branch of the CWA took out the team of the year award for their work cooking and catering to raise funds for medical equipment and creating pamper packs for drought-affected women.
