A Turvey Park Fire and Rescue spokesperson said they were on scene at the incident near Baylis and Thompson streets at about 9am on Friday morning.
"There was a broken pipeline in the ground behind 199 Baylis Street around an apartment building," they said.
Staff in surrounding businesses were also asked to evacuate their stores while the leak was fixed.
"There were about five businesses who had to evacuate while we did some atmospheric monitoring to make sure it was safe to go back in," the spokesperson said.
Macarthur gas company was also on site to clamp the leak, and at about 10am, it was rendered safe to the public.
However, the gas company workers remain on site to make repairs.
