At about 4.30 on Monday afternoon, 60-year-old Sarkis Daoud was attempting to cross Pearson Street when he was struck by a utility.
"Unfortunately, at the same time he tried to cross, a white Isuzu D-MAX utility driven by a 27-year-old male was pulling out of a driveway," Riverina Police District Inspector John Aichinger said.
"The vehicle did collide with that pedestrian as he was crossing the road, and he was rushed to Wagga Base Hospital, but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries and passed away."
Mr Daoud recently moved to Wagga, and his family have been notified. Inspector Aichinger said his wife was with him at the time of the incident, and investigations are continuing.
"At this stage we aren't certain on details, but the actual impact was more towards the middle of the road and we are seeking anyone from the public with dashcam footage who saw it happen to come forward to assist with the investigation," Inspector Aichinger said.
In other news:
The driver of the utility was also conveyed to hospital and underwent mandatory blood and alcohol testing, but Inspector Aichinger said they are still awaiting the results.
"At this stage there is nothing to suggest that there was alcohol or drugs involved, and no indication that the driver was distracted," he said.
"The driver has been spoken to and we are looking into this information, as well as speaking to all witnesses involved."
It is not yet known if charges will be laid.
A NSW Ambulance Service spokesperson said Mr Daoud was treated for a cardiac arrest at the scene as a result of trauma suffered during the incident.
The collision occurred between Battery World on one side of Pearson Street and Wagga Motors' Mercedes Benz dealership on the other.
The road was closed on Monday night between the Sturt Highway and the Dobney Avenue roundabout outside Bunnings hardware store.
