Just after 4.30pm, emergency services were called to Pearson Street, near Dobney Avenue, after a 60-year-old man was hit by a utility vehicle.
"The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wagga Base Hospital where he died," a NSW police statement said.
"The driver, a 27-year-old man, was not injured. He was also taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
"Officers from Riverina Police District attended and established a crime scene which will be examined by specialist forensic officers.
"Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have dashcam vision to come forward."
A NSW Ambulance Service spokesperson said the man was treated for a cardiac arrest at the scene as a result of trauma suffered during the incident.
The normally busy road was closed on Monday night between the Sturt Highway and the Dobney Avenue roundabout outside Bunnings hardware store.
The area where the collision occurred appeared to be on Pearson Street between Battery World on one side and Wagga Motors' Mercedes Benz dealership on the other.
As of 7pm on Monday, the section of Pearson Street was still closed.
Police have urged anyone with information about this incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
