It is proposed that Pine Gully Road, which has been declared a national blackspot, will have roundabouts installed at the intersections of Estella Road, Muttuama Parade and Old Narrandera Road.

Traffic lights will also be used to improve safety at the future Cootamundra Boulevard, Pine Gully Road and Avocet Drive intersections.

A developer is expected to design and build a new road that finally connects the suburbs of Estella and Gobbagombalin via Avocet Drive.

Estella resident Shantal Armstrong said the upgrade was "long overdue" and definitely required for the Old Narrandera and Pine Gully roads intersection given that cars nearly collided there on a daily basis.

She said roundabouts have assisted traffic flow for other residential areas such as Tatton and Red Hill Road, so it would be expected to do the same for the northern residents.

Ms Armstrong said it was important, now more than ever, that Wagga's northern suburbs had an adequate road network to support the new housing and infrastructure continuing to be constructed as the city grows.

"There is a lot of traffic using that road. The school is halfway built, there will be buses and more cars. The traffic is crazy and as soon as it gets dark there is absolutely no lighting," she said.

Wagga councillor Paul Funnell said an upgrade of the road has been "drastically needed" ever since the population of the northern suburbs started to rise.

Given Wagga City Council has already given a green light for another subdivision in the area, Cr Funnell said it only exacerbates the risks at the intersection of Pine Gully and Old Narrandera roads.

"There is no time to wait, it needs to be done now," he said. "I am fed up with this whole situation ... all we are doing is playing catch up rather than having a forward-thinking vision, getting stuff done and putting safety first."

Cr Funnell said he supported a link between Avocet Drive and Pine Gully Road because it will be a critical connection that could ease the traffic congestion at the dangerous intersection of Old Narrandera Road and the Olympic Highway by diverting traffic to the flyover.

The council is also planning to reconstruct nearly three kilometres of road between Estella, Pine Gully and Old Narrandera roads.

The upgrade of Pine Gully Road and Old Narrandera Road is currently in the design phase and the council will announce an information session for the public once the design is finalised.

The project is to be finished by September 2021.
