Police were called to a school in Beckom, near Coolamon, at about 1.30pm on Tuesday following reports a male was seen carrying a rifle near Beckom Public School.
The school placed itself into voluntary lockdown as a precautionary measure.
Officers from the Riverina Police District attended the scene and established a perimeter before locating the 16-year-old boy who was in possession of a rifle.
The boy was arrested without incident and is currently assisting police with inquiries, while the gun has been seized.
NSW Ambulance reported an alert about 2pm, but were called off with no one injured during the incident.
