It might seem alien now, looking through our 2020 vision firmly gripped by the coronavirus pandemic, but it wasn't that long ago thousands of people were cruising the Australian highways and byways getting to that icon of the bush, the bachelor and spinsters ball.
But not this year. Many B&S balls all around the Riverina, NSW and Victoria have pulled the pin on this year's events, writing off any hopes of raising funds for their rural communities from these rowdy weekends.

Cootamundra's B&S was called off at the last minute as the pandemic hit in March, Finley didn't go ahead in May, Hay's June long weekend event was cancelled. Jerildere - which has been running for more than half a century - was due for its big party on Saturday, and an expected crowd nearing 2000 won't be turning up to Ariah Park in October for the first ball out of winter.
It's not just the organisers hurting either - ballgoers are mourning the loss of a good time.
