In the third all-Wagga clash in as many rounds, Kangaroos are looking to take a rare win over Southcity at Equex Centre on Saturday.
Coming off a much-improved performance with a 24-18 loss the Blues, captain-coach Hayden Ashcroft is confident better things are in store for the club.
"I think it is going to come naturally as we build combinations and everyone gets comfortable with each other being a new side," Ashcroft said.
"(Tumut) have a good side, and have picked up some great players, so in terms of the playing group we have I think we are going to surprise a few more sides this year."
Both sides have suffered losses to Brothers to start the season.
Kangaroos suffered a 30-10 defeat in round one before Southcity fell 38-30.
However the Brethren led by 24 points approaching half-time.
Aschroft believes they are better placed ahead of the clash at Equex Centre.
"I think it was a big improvement from round one against Brothers but I still think there is a lot to work on," he said.
"I still think we have our best footy ahead of us yet and while Tumut are a good side we can't be comfortable with losing either.
"As well as the positives there is still room for plenty of improvement."

Tumut jumped out to a 10-0 nil after a couple of simple errors from Kangaroos well inside their own half.
However Ashcroft was pleased with the way the team responded to the poor start.
And continued to do so as the Blues threatened to jump clear at a number of stages.
"I think what we did best on the weekend was we didn't panic," Ashcroft said.
"We had some defensive lapses in round one out wide but we tidied that up this week and it was good.
"We didn't panic, stayed patient and in the end I think it could have gone either way.
"There were a few missed opportunities on our end as well."
With Zac Graham unavailable, Ashcroft tinkered with his spine.
Eddie Jackson moved to hooker to cover Graham with Jordan Coleman moving to five-eighth.
They were moves the coach is considering with up against the Bulls.
"I was pretty pleased with how Eddie Jackson went at nine and it was a more we were contemplating doing earlier on," he said.
"At the moment there won't be many changes."
Southcity have lost plenty of star power from the team who went down to Tumut in last year's grand final.
Coming off the bye they are expected to be better for their first game under Nathan Rose however the 23-year-old doesn't want to focus on their rivals.
"I don't really worry about what the other team brings but I'm more focused on getting our game right each week," Ashcroft said.
"If we can do that well and deliver what we train for on the weekend we will be able to match any side."
Completion is one thing Ashcroft is looking to improve up against Southcity with the majority of their points coming from long range.
