The four-year-old showed plenty of ability as he got his racing career off to a winning date at Riverina Paceway last month.
It's been over six weeks since he won in a mile rate of 1:56.3 while racing without cover and Junee trainer-driver Matthew Harris hopes he's got him right for an intriguing affair to close out the six-race card.
"He should go ok," Harris said.
"He's inexperienced but he should go alright.
"He seems to have a good attitude, which I enjoy in a horse, and seems to have some speed."
Backbencher has drawn well in barrier two, in race down runners to five following two scratchings.
However there is plenty of form with only Opal not tasting success among their last three starts.
Harris could not have been happier with Backbencher's debut as he toughed it out.
"He did do a good job," he said.
"His manners were great, he felt off the gate and did everything I asked him to.
"He seems to do that on the training track and I thought he went really good."
Backbencher picked up a cold since then, but has a trial leading into his next assignment.
Harris believes it is a suitable option.
"He got a cold after Wagga but I've given him a trial at Coolamon," he said.
"There wasn't a race at Wagga, it was a horrible program from him with being a 54 and we would have been up against 60s and 70s."
It has taken the son of Always A Virgin a long time to get to the track, but it wasn't manners which held him back.
Instead Harris has shown plenty of patience with him after injuring himself as a foal.
"He had an injury as a foal to his back leg," he said.
"It's not affecting him now and it set him back.
"I just put him aside and I had enough horses without him so that's the reason he didn't race.
"He probably wasn't broken in until he was an early two-year-old and got put into the paddock.
"He's sorted down this in one prep after he was broken in so he's done a pretty good job."
