Murray has returned to Henty, where he is in isolation, and will link up with his junior club alongside younger brothers Nick and Toby at the Lions.
Murray has not played football in almost two years due to an 18-month suspension for a positive match-day drug test.
Murray played 13 games for Collingwood in 2018, after being traded from Sydney, and was nominated for the AFL Rising Star award before he was suspended.
His suspension ended in February and the 22-year-old was set to play in the VFL this year before it's season was cancelled.
Murray will now return to where it all began at Ganmain Sportsground. His two-week isolation period has ruled him out of Saturday's season opener against Turvey Park but he will come in for GGGM's opening home game against Wagga Tigers the following week.
GGGM coach Christin Macri is rapt to have Murray on board.
"He'll be very handy, but also to help him get back into footy. He's had some time out," Macri said.
"He could come off half-back, go through the midfield or run up and down the wing.
"You've got to be careful of overcooking blokes as well. Sam will be keen to play, no doubt, but he hasn't played footy for a couple of years now so we'll just look after him but he'll be a huge asset for us no doubt."
Macri explained that both the club and Murray are determined to ensure everything is done right.
"He won't play this week, he'll play next week," he said.
"He got up here on Tuesday, he's in isolation in Henty, doing what he needs to do there for two weeks. He had a permit through his work that he could come straight over but we still decided, along with Sam, that we would all do the right thing and do the two weeks isolation."
Nick Murray, who was also set to play in the VFL this season, was one of GGGM's best in the trial win over Osborne earlier in the month and will provide the Lions with another key forward option.
Toby, the youngest of the trio, is a developing ruckman.
