Joe van der Kleij had left the room only minutes earlier on Saturday night to head into the adjoining kitchen of his Campbell Place home, when the incident occurred.
A car mounted the kerb, crashed through Mr van der Kleij's loungeroom and then smashed into a car port.
"At first, I thought I thought a big thunderstorm had hit. Then I realised it was a car," he said.
Mr van der Kleij, 65, has lived in the house for most of his life.
He has already begun trying to repair the property. Volunteers from the State Emergency Service were at the home late on Saturday, helping to hang tarps and brace the roof.
Mr van de Kleij has been left saddened not only by the damage to his house, but also to furniture and personal items, some of which had enormous sentimental value.
He is also hoping to get the property repaired as quickly as possible because of the cold weather.
Even on Monday, old photos and other items were being recovered from Mr van der Kleij's backyard.
Neighbours Kim and Brent Rodd were outside when the incident happened.
Mrs Rodd said they saw a car driving very fast before it hit the kerb and then smashed into the house.
Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he heard loud revving, followed by "five seconds of thunderous crashing".
"I thought a car gone into a house," he said,
"All the lights in the street came on at once and people ran outside."
After making sure Mr van der Kleij was safe, neighbours helped to call emergency services.
The neighbour said it was not the first time that he had been concerned about cars driving in the cul-de-sac.
"I don't think people realise it is a dead end," he said.
According to Wagga police, officers were called to Campbell Place about 9.20pm on Saturday, following reports a vehicle had crashed into a house. No one was injured.
Police spoke with the 21-year-old male driver of the vehicle. He was arrested and taken to Wagga Base Hospital for mandatory testing.
Investigations are continuing and no charges have been laid at this stage.
