While the premiers came through a low-scoring clash with Tumut at Jarrah Oval on Saturday, Wagga City showed they have got plenty of points in them with victory over CSU at Conolly Rugby Complex.

Front rower Adam Mokotupu scored a hat-trick while former Bill Castle Medal winner Noa Rabici snared a double in the 47-15 win over the new-look Reddies.

New coach Ben Schreiber was impressed with the club's first outing.

"It was an unreal start to the season for us," Schreiber said. "To get the win is always a bonus."

CSU went with Wagga City in the early stages, responding to the opening two tries with Hamish McMahon's first to make it 19-10.

However they struggled to stay with their rivals in the second half.

Fitness was one thing Schreiber was pleased with.

"The boys enthusiasm (was pleasing) and our fitness was there as well," he said.

"The boys have obviously worked hard coming back after our hiatus."

Discipline is one thing Schreiber is looking to improve but was pleased with how well their set piece came together with hooker Darryl Hemopo impressing.

Meanwhile Waratahs took a 12-3 win over the Bulls in the hills.

While they struggled to hit the scoreboard, co-coach Angus Stevenson thought the side showed plenty of potential.

"There was plenty of opportunities and there was plenty of points we left out there but we just didn't capitalise," Stevenson said.

"I was pretty gutted at the end of the game as I thought we were the better team and the scoreline makes it look a lot closer than that.

"I thought Tumut were good and have a lot to work on .... and we were probably lucky to play them first off."

Stevenson thought his side was rusty and is looking to build team cohesion ahead of a clash against Wagga City.

"I think we are naturally slow to start sometimes and I think the players knew it," he said.

"They can see what we have to work on, a little bit of ruck work, a little bit of timing and a little bit of figuring out how the team can move together."

Both leaders are bracing for a bigger test at Conolly Rugby Complex.

Schreiber believes it will allow for to gain a much better indication of where the side is at.

"It is going to be a good litmus test for us," he said.

"Them being the defending champs it will show us where we are at within the short comp. There isn't much time for us to build into things so hopefully we can hit the ground running."
