The Swans were the second club to withdraw from the Riverina League last week and Griggs decided to take the opportunity to return to his junior club.
He will travel from Griffith for the season before deciding on his future at the end of the year.
Griggs is looking forward to linking up with former Griffith coach Adrian Pavese, and teammate Jordan Iudica, at Queanbeyan.
"Yeah I'm going back to play at my home club. There's Pav, Jordie, Campbell Lovell, a few other blokes. I'll get to see some old faces and get to enjoy some footy again, which will be good," Griggs said.
"And not have the stresses of coaching so I'll be able to enjoy the footy for once which will be nice."
Griggs has been a huge inclusion since he arrived at Griffith from Queanbeyan in 2015.
He has coached the club to grand final appearances the last two seasons and has been hellbent on leading the Swans to the ultimate prize before he returned to Canberra.
The lure of home has been getting stronger but he says the move back to Queanbeyan is only for this season at the moment.
"Pav has been pretty keen to get me back for a few years now and with how we've been going at the Swannies, we've been pretty close the last few years so I've wanted to see that through," he said.
"But with no footy this year, it gives me the opportunity to go back and have a kick. I'm going to travel this year and see how things go after that."
Griggs conceded how the Swans are placed heading into 2021 will have a big say on his decision to stay or go.
"I'll reassess at the end of the year and see what needs to be done. Where the clubs at and if we're in a good spot," he said.
Griggs, who turned 30 on Thursday, will take a cautious approach to his travel to and from Canberra.
"The older you get, the less footy you have left so it's going to be exciting to play with some new blokes back at my old club," he said.
"In saying that, if this coronavirus gets out of hand then I'll have to pull the pin. The last thing I want is to bring it back to Griffith."
