The IGA store manager Graeme Biss said there were big changes ahead for the Tolland Shopping Centre store, which will be carried out with as little disruption as possible to its customers.

The ownership will officially change hands from Bernardi's to IGA Tolland on July 28, but Mr Biss assured customers they can still shop freely throughout the changeover.

He said his vision for the business was to give customers an easy choice for meals as soon as they walk into the store.

"The fresh produce will be the focus and the delicatessen will be back with proper hot food options," he said.

Mr Biss said the majority of the existing employees at Bernardi's have been taken on under the new management.

Bernardi's chief executive Joe Bernardi said the company's vision for its Wagga store to become a full-line supermarket had fallen short and the site was more suitable to an IGA operation that would do well in the large-format convenience store.

Mr Bernardi said it was a good move for them as the company looks to shift its focus to opening discount variety stores in the Riverina and Central West by Christmas.

However, he said it was not the end for Bernardi's in Wagga because they will continue to assess supermarket opportunities if, and when, they arise.

"I think it is a good outcome for the store and that format," he said.

Bernardi's customer John Tomkins said it was unfortunate that the supermarket was leaving the city after building up its clientele over the last three years.

However, he was happy to hear that the space will not stay empty. He said it was great news that an IGA supermarket will return to the location and continue providing an option for those residents living nearby.

Bernardi's will close early on July 27 for stocktake before opening the next day under the IGA brand.
