However, the cancellation of the elite North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) in which Lucas plays for the Canberra Demons has seen him head home to sign up with the Leeton-Whitton Crows.
Lucas Meline's story is reflected throughout the Riverina with its namesake league one of the few which is, at this stage, still intending to administer a shortened season from Saturday.
What had initially started out as a bleak prospect has turned into an embarrassment of riches for several clubs as 'leagueless' players looked further afield for spots.
Leeton-Whitton Crows' president, Tim Carroll, said the club was welcoming back former players from NEAFL and Victorian regional and suburban leagues.
"The young blokes who are at Victorian universities are studying online because of the coronavirus situation so coming back to the Crows makes great sense," Carroll said.
Meanwhile, the Meline brothers reacquainted themselves with each other's tactics during a hard fought Crows versus Crows pre-season match at the Leeton Showground on Saturday.
