Greater Hume Council rangers came across the dog in South Street on August 16, 2017, about 1pm.

Thirteen days later, Domestic Animal Services in the ACT took custody of the dog for several days after an attack.

It was just two months later that Tania Klemke suffered fatal injuries at her Canberra home after she tried to save a male visitor being attacked by the dog, named Simba.

Her son Bradley Klemke, who will turn 28 later this month, was charged by the council.

The charges were that Klemke had a companion animal not registered as required for a restricted dog and that he had not identified a companion animal as prescribed for a restricted breed.

The fact the dog, which was also described at the time of the fatal attack as a "mixed breed", killed Ms Klemke was mentioned by police prosecutor Sergeant Andrew Pike when the charges went before Albury Local Court this week.

"Within 12 months of the offence, that dog killed the defendant's mother in Canberra," Sergeant Pike said.

Magistrate Richard Funston highlighted the distressing nature of what occurred, but also noted that this was not relevant to the actual charges.

Klemke, who was listed in court papers as living in the Wagga suburb of Kooringal, did not appear to answer the charges, though the court was told that guilty pleas had been entered to each of the matters.

Ms Klemke was killed on October 25, 2017.

Police were forced to shoot the animal dead after it attacked them too while they were trying to take steps to help the critically injured woman. Attempts were being made at the time to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on Ms Klemke.

It was reported at the time that the dog attacked someone so badly that late August day that they required 42 stitches.

Once, a neighbour reported the dog charging at his two young children. Ultimately, Ms Klemke had to keep the dog inside because of a damaged back fence.

In yet another incident, from seven months before the fatal attack, the dog had its ear shot off during a violent home invasion.

One of the three was armed with a shotgun.

Another had a machete and after aggressively knocking on the front door, pepper-sprayed the dog.

As the victim was bashed - their raid targeted suspected drugs and cash inside - the dog bit the man, who swung at it with the machete before a shot was fired.
