Shortly after 6pm on Thursday, a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were sitting in a parked car in a carpark off Trail Street when they were approached by an unknown man.
The man reached into the open driver's side window and removed the keys, before threatening the pair with a knife.
The driver got out of the vehicle and, following a brief scuffle, the armed man got in the car.
The couple managed to get the man back out of the car before he fled on foot down a nearby alleyway towards Fitzmaurice Street.
The driver sustained cuts to his arms and hands, and was taken to Wagga Base Hospital for treatment.
Officers from Riverina Police District attended and established two crime scenes at the carpark and alleyway.
As inquiries continue, detectives would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist with inquiries.
He is described as being of Aboriginal appearance with a medium build, aged between 20 and 25, and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident.
Investigators are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
