The stretch of land along the rail track between Grinton Avenue in Ashmont and Mima Street in Glenfield Park has become a hotspot for criminals to pass between the neighbourhoods.
However, after two years of attempts to stop the criminal thoroughfare from the city's Neighbourhood Watch group, fencing has finally gone up along Grinton Avenue.
Wagga Neighbourhood Watch president Wayne Deaner said it was about time action was taken, for both a reduction in criminal activity, but also to improve safety.
"People tend to walk along the track or cross it, and a lot of the time they're up to no good," he said.
"But it's also extremely dangerous to be doing that on a rail line, criminal or not."
An initial stretch of fencing was erected two years ago, according to Mr Deaner, but didn't block the entire stretch of road.
"We petitioned, hassled, got drone footage and put all the paperwork to the Crime Prevention Working Group over the past two years to get things happening, and finally they've listened and have started putting in the panels to extend the fence to behind the SES building," he said.
"We are also very thankful for the Australian Rail Track Corporation as well for their assistance in the matter and helping make this happen."
