The victim and a 37-year-old, who police said were known to each other, were drinking together at a home about 9.30pm on Saturday when festivities turned sour.

Police allege the 37-year-old started an argument with the victim, grabbing him and pinning him on his back before punching him to both the left and right side of his head.

Police said the incident took a violent turn from there.

The offender allegedly then leaned back and grabbed a knife from the kitchen sink, holding it above his head and saying "I'm going to stab you" and "I will kill you".

The victim told police he thought he was going to be stabbed in the neck.

The alleged offender then stabbed a nearby wine box in the lounge room and again allegedly told the man he would kill him.

After holding the knife to the victim's neck for about 30 seconds, the offender appeared to calm down, allowing the victim to rush to a neighbouring home where the police were called.

The accused told police he stabbed the wine box and was "mucking around", saying the victim must have 'taken it the wrong way.

Police allege the offender was heavily intoxicated and was placed in "time out" at the station until he could be spoken to further. He was also found to be in possession of 0.7 grams of marijuana.

When he was sufficiently sober, he was charged with armed with intent, common assault and intimidation.
