Plans for a sevens competition, for both men's and women's, are in the pipeline including the potential for representative football.
Southern Inland rugby manager Jack Heffernan has been working on a way to introduce the Olympic sport to Wagga's busy sporting calendar.
He's looking for finalise plans for fortnightly carnivals.
"We're looking at a sevens series," Heffernan said.
"It is something we've wanted to and just haven't had the chance to do. We were planning it as our back up option in case 15s rugby didn't happen this year."
Southern Inland will start their season on July 25.
However only four clubs, Waratahs, Wagga City, CSU and Tumut, will play in the first grade competition. Seven will take part in second grade and women's.
Heffernan is looking to have three carnivals from late October to early December, which will coincide with plans made in Canberra.
It opens the opportunity for representative football, which has been cancelled due to the impact of the coronavirus crisis.
"Canberra will have their own premier comp which we might be part of as a representative team," Heffernan said.
The Riverina has provided a wealth of rugby sevens talent led by Olympic gold medallists Alicia Lucas, nee Quirk, and Sharni Williams.
The new format would provide a new pathway for both men and women to play the sport.
"It is a good chance to bring some younger players through as not all the older blokes like playing sevens," Heffernan said.
"The young kids do and they are a bit fitter.
"It is something different and a bit more rugby in the calendar year doesn't hurt."
