It is no secret it has been a difficult decade or so for the media industry not just in Australia, but right around the world.

For many of us, advances in technology have irrevocably changed the way we consume our news and entertainment.
Websites compete with newspapers. Podcasts compete with radio. Streaming services compete with television.
Mastheads, including The Daily Advertiser, have had to make seismic adjustments to the way they operate in order to remain relevant.
A tick over two years ago, as part of that process, The Daily Advertiser introduced digital subscriptions.
Such a monumental decision was not taken lightly. For years we had been providing our online content for free and we knew the change would not please everyone.
Some signed up straight away. Others it took a little longer to win over. And there are still readers out there we have yet to convince to take the plunge.
But to say we have been overwhelmed with the support from the community we serve is an understatement.
For all the challenges the changing media landscape throws up, there are also opportunities.
One opportunity is for us to get to know each other a little better.
That is why tomorrow we will officially launch a Daily Advertiser subscriber-only Facebook page for our subscribers to join if they wish.
Our hope for the page is that it will bring our staff closer to our readers, and vice versa.
We want the page to be a safe and respectful place where we can discuss the important issues facing our community, hear what we are doing well and what we need to improve on, and give you an insight into who we are and how we go about producing the newspaper and website.
In that spirit, we have introduced a new staff profile series, titled Behind the Byline, which this week features our council and defence reporter Daina Oliver.

We are really excited about this development and we hope you are too.
All the best for the week ahead,
Ross Tyson, editor
