Four people have put their hand up to represent the Nationals in the Eden-Monaro byelection, with the party to conduct its preselection process just days before rolls close for nominees.
The Nationals candidate will be running against their own Coalition partner in Liberal candidate Fiona Kotvojs, who has already started her campaign, and Labor candidate Kristy McBain.
"The National Party and the Country Party have only ever contested the seat 12 times and we have never held the seat but we are giving choice to the voters," Mr McCormack said.
"If they want a National Party candidate, then we will have one for them to put a number one beside on the ballot paper."
Yass businesswoman and former ACT public servant Fleur Flanery, Queanbeyan councillor Trevor Hicks, Cooma grazier Michael Green and Bywong nutritionist Mareeta Grundy will be seeking the preselection votes of around 200 National Party members on Saturday.
A crowded field is set to contest the election, with a dozen people set to be on the ballot paper on July 4.
Mr McCormack said he was "looking forward" to campaigning with the Nationals candidate and said it was always his stance to let the party's electorate branches make preselection decisions.
"I know the Liberal candidate [Dr Kotvojs]; stood beside her on a number of occasions before the May 18 election last year and she has put her best efforts forward and she will be a formidable candidate this time," Mr McCormack said.
"I know the Bega mayor, Kristy McBain, the Labor candidate, and good luck to her.
"We'll have a candidate and whilst they are starting with only a month to go, they'll give it their best shot and we'll support them as best they can."
Dr Kotvojs said running in Eden-Monaro was "a decision for the National Party as to what they choose to do and who they choose".
"It is important for the people of Australia to have a democratic process where they have the option of who they choose," she said.
Ms McBain declined to comment.
The road to the by-election hasn't been smooth for the party, with NSW Nationals leader John Barilaro widely tipped to run before he withdrew from the race, amid speculation he didn't have the support of Mr McCormack.
In leaked text messages between the pair, Mr Barilaro reportedly said Mr McCormack felt threatened by his bid.
After Mr Barilaro bowed out it was unclear if the Nationals would contest the seat, but the local membership pushed for the party to run.
Eden-Monaro has swung between the Labor and Liberal parties and was considered a bellwether seat until 2016.
The byelection was triggered by the resignation of Labor MP Mike Kelly due to health issues.
Nominations for candidates for the by-election close on Tuesday.
