A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said two appliances from Turvey Park 472 Station attended Ku Kookaburra preschool on Coleman Street following a Triple 000 call at about 1pm.
"Fire and Rescue was able to put the fire out pretty quickly," the spokesman said.
"24 children and four staff were safely evacuated and there were no injuries. They were lucky."
A verandah at the rear of the property suffered minor damage after the fire spread to the underside of the ceiling.
472 Station Turvey Park posted an update on its Facebook page on Tuesday evening.
"Great work from the staff at KU Kookaburra preschool today! Just before 1pm today we received a call to a fire at the preschool," the station posted.
"Two appliances from 472 station attended and the first arriving crew had the fire out in five minutes and then commenced checking to make sure the fire hadn't spread into the roof. Our second appliance arrived a short time after and assisted with checking in the main roof and ensure the fire was out.
"The whole time this was going on the staff had the children safely evacuated to their evacuation point and everyone was calm and the children were eagerly watching the firefighters, police and ambulance paramedics all working together to ensure their safety."
"Fire damage was enough to close the centre for the rest of the day but the quick action by the staff to call 000 and evacuate the children made for a safe and quickly dealt with incident. We told the staff next time they want the fire brigade to visit they don't need to go to such an effort to get us there."
Turvey Park 472 Station units also attended a suspicious house fire in Ashmont early on Monday morning.
