All bowling activities where shut down in March due to the pandemic, but as restrictions start to ease some across the board the sport is starting back up again.

At this stage only socially-distanced roll ups are allowed.

However it provides the opportunity for club members to get back in touch with the sport.

Wagga RSL re-introduced some action on their greens on May 15 and club president Max Sanbrook admitted it has taken some time to see a pick up in numbers.

"There wasn't quite as many as I thought would turn up and is being controlled as we didn't want to go above our 10 per hour," Sanbrook said. "It's worked out perfect.

"We're getting about five or six per hour."

Club members are able to utilise an hour period for a roll up between 10am and 4pm, excluding Mondays.

There is a maximum of two players per rink and there must a rink in between.

Only one player is the handle the jack and mat, which need to be sanitised after use, and a record of all people in attendance is taken.

Rules Club bowls co-ordinator Gary Brookes has been working hard to allow for their members to get back into action on Wednesday.

However they will be restricted to 12 people over the two greens at one time with men on Wednesdays and Fridays and ladies on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and 1pm.

Brookes is hopeful it is beginning of a return to normality.

"It is a start and it hasn't been easy as so many things change so often," Brookes said.

"We've been trying to get it going for two or three weeks now but things keep changing.

"We've finally got it settled and this is virtually a trial to see how it goes."

Considering the demographic of most bowlers are in the at risk over 60 age range.

"There is not too many players under 60 so we have to make sure we are all safe - that is the main thing," Sanbrook said.

In time Sanbrook is hoping for the allowance to increase, predicting if around 50 or 60 people could utilise the greens at one time the club could run their championships.

However he suspects interclub tournaments will be a long way off.
