Officers from the Riverina Police District had been on the hunt for a 20-year-old man for three months, wanted for multiple arrest warrants based in Wagga.
"Yesterday, we located the man in Mt Austin," Riverina Police District Inspector Adrian Telfer said.
"He was chased on a motorbike but police caught and arrested him."
Inspector Telfer said the man was taken to Wagga Police Station, but during his arrest, he suffered a wound to his thumb and was taken to Wagga Base Hospital for treatment on Wednesday afternoon.
"The intention was to return him to Wagga Police Station, but in that process, he escaped from the custody of police," he said.
"Police did chase the man, but he was ultimately lost."
A short time later, Inspector Telfer said their four-legged co-worker joined the search.
"Our police canine located him in a backyard near the hospital and the man was re arrested," he said.
The offender has been charged with 10 offences, with the most serious being escape police custody.
The initial warrants for his arrest related to break and enter in Wagga.
