Officers from the Riverina Police District were called to a home in Junee at about 3am Thursday following reports of a stabbing.
Police say a 34-year-old man went to the home and struck another 49-year-old man in the head with a machete.
The 34-year-old man also sustained stab wounds after being struck with the machete by the older man.
The younger man presented to Junee Hospital with lacerations to his abdomen and was transferred to a hospital in Wagga where he is expected to undergo surgery.
The older man was taken to Wagga Base Hospital for treatment to lacerations to his head after police arrived on scene.
A crime scene has been established as officers commence inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident. It's not known if the men are known to each other.
Police believe the incident may have been targeted and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
