Riverina Police District Inspector Adrian Telfer said officers were investigating stolen property from Alfredtown yesterday before coming across a stolen motorcycle.
"We believe the motorcycle has been stolen, and while making inquiries into the thefts, police did become aware of an individual riding this particular bike," he said.
"We also observed that the individual tried to dispose of the bike in the river."
Inspector Telfer said, while they are "pretty certain" of the thief's identity, the owner of the property remains unknown.
"The items appear to have been stolen from around River Road, and we are asking people to check all their equipment in sheds and on farming properties," he said.
"If you are missing a Honda XR250, please come forward as we would like to return it to its rightful owner."
Anyone with information is urged to call Wagga Police Station on 6922 2599, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
