Organised by Derek Motion of the Booranga Writers' Centre, the event will be run entirely via video conferencing. It will feature local poets Jo Cochrane, Lachlan Brown, and Sarah Tiffen.
"The featured guests will read something they've written, and then there will be an open mic at the end too," Mr Motion said.
"Over the years, there have been a few regular poetry events in Wagga, so there's this sense that people are looking for that."
A poet for more than 20 years, Mr Motion began writing the creative form more regularly when he was at university.
He has since gone on to publish an anthology of original works.
It is his hope that the virtual open mic might spark more than a few latent passions for prose and poetry from the audience.
"You don't have to read anything, you can just observe. You don't even have to turn your camera on for it," Mr Motion said.
"I remember my first time in front of an audience, it was nerve-wracking to stand in front of everyone and read something you've written.
"This way, you don't have to do that, you can just stay in your own bedroom."
The idea to host the event stemmed from a similar initiative run by fellow poet Jo Cochrane.
Several weeks ago, she staged a virtual open mic that was attended online by 15 people.
Participants are encouraged to log in from 8pm on Thursday, with details for doing so available on the Booranga Writers' Centre Facebook page.
