Harness Racing NSW announced they will be cutting prizemoney by 20 per cent due to the coronavirus crisis from Monday.
Reigning Southwest and Riverina drivers premiership winner Blake Jones admitted the cut has he and partner Ellen Bartley considering a move from their Coleambally base.
"If things don't look like changing elsewhere I don't think we will be hanging around here," Jones said.
"You can't make a living racing for peanuts if you are doing it full-time.
"It is too hard for owners to pay up and it is not going to work as the bills will out way what you are going to win even if you have a good horse who can win races.
"It is still not going to pay for itself."
Decreased TAB turnover with the closure of pubs and clubs was blamed for the reduction.
HRNSW have indicated they will increase prizemoney back once the impact of COVID-19 has relented.
After winning his first training premiership last season, Junee horseman Bruce Harpley is concerned by how long the industry will remain in the current climate.
"It was inevitable, we aren't stupid, but more a matter of how much and when it happened," Harpley said.
"Now it is matter of how long it hangs around for so it is definitely a worry.
"I can understand the position they are in and everyone has had to suffer in this whole (COVID-19) thing.
"Not too many have benefited out of it."
The biggest concern is that cost won't decrease while the potential to earn has.
With the reduction there are concerns that at over half the region's meetings winning horses will not qualify for bonuses.
Temora trainer-driver Ray Walker suggested points horses receive for winning should be altered to reflect the change.
