Certain Shaft ($9.50) delivered on the potential he has shown in patches with victory in the NSW Racehorse Owners Association Maiden Showcase Handicap (1400m).
It was another Wagga carnival victory for Morgan, who only trains a small team, with Certain Shaft his only runner for the two days.
"He's a bit better on the wet than he is on the dry," Morgan said.
"He hadn't been doing much on the dry but now on the soft, he did appreciate it."
Certain Shaft is owned by Roger Lescun, who also bred the horse.
The four-year-old galloped on the course proper on Thursday morning for former jockey Brad Clark, who helps the club rate the track on race days.
It is a habit of Morgans and has worked to similar effect in the past.
Certain Shaft was ridden to victory by Mathew Cahill, and won by one length from Your Eyes Only ($2.90) and Royal Fighter ($5.50).
Cahill had Certain Shaft three wide, with cover, and the horse let down with a blistering turn of foot despite the heavy conditions when he was let loose at the 250 metre mark, quickly putting the race to bed.
It was the gelding's first career victory at start number eight after three previous minor placings.
