COLLINGULLIE-Glenfield Park president Tony Dean believes AFL Riverina is facing an uphill battle to get a season off the ground for 2020, pointing to a lack of cash flow for clubs and a shortage of volunteers as major hurdles.

The AFL is set to announced after May 11, when the plans for the elite competition will be announced after coronavirus restrictions are reviewed.
Dean said half a season "could put us back six or eight years financially" and pointed to the fact many volunteers are elderly and in the high risk category as another factor to consider.
"Basically we're waiting to see what protocols the AFL come up and we'll go from there," he said.
"The club has sent them (AFL Riverina) an email with some of the club's concerns in relation to volunteers and what have you.
"We've had volunteers communicate to me they won't be available. We'll have no dramas getting players, but we have dramas getting people to do the day to day things."
Dean said a potential absence of funds from gate takings and canteens, on top of significantly less sponsorship, would also make it difficult for a reduced season to be financially sustainable.
"The players are fine but that's only part of the puzzle. Even half a season is going to be devastating for most clubs financially," he said.
"It could put us six or eight years back financially. We're OK, but when I say we're OK it's money put aside for our facilities that would just disappear.
"That would go toward player payments and what have you. It could put most clubs back a long time, and even on the other side of this it's not going to be easy moving forward.
"I just don't think they're going to have time to implement it (2020 season), to be quite honest."
Dean also feels extending the season past September could be difficult.
"You can't go too much deeper than we usually do anyway, because you'd be running in the heat," he said.
"Then you'd be looking at night football grounds and whether grounds could accommodate that. But is cricket going to put their season back for football?"
