The two men hailed the cab at Tolland before asking the driver to take them to Heath Street near the intersection of Fernleigh Road in Mount Austin.
Once the taxi reached the destination the backseat passenger brandished a knife and threatened the driver with it before kicking him out of the car and hijacking the vehicle.
The taxi driver was uninjured, and the taxi itself was found dumped just around the corner in Heath Street near Turvey Park.
The two men are still on the loose, and police say little is known about them other than the fact that they appeared to be young and were wearing hoodies at the time of the hijacking.
Wagga Inspector John Aichinger is asking witnesses to come forward to help identify the two men and bring them to justice.
"Police are appealing to the community for any information in regards to people who were in that area at the time," Inspector Aichinger said.
"There is some suggestion that they were picked up in that area as well, so we are looking for any information in regards to those two people."
Wagga Taxis declined to comment.

On that same day, Wagga police allegedly seized 10 cannabis plants and cannabis leaves from a 45-year-old Tolland man during a search of his Boyd Place home that Tuesday afternoon.
The plants were large in size, ranging from 130 to 170 centimetres in height, and Inspector Aichinger congratulated his team on the haul.
"The search warrant yesterday was [based on] good information and good investigation," Inspector Aichinger said. "Police are out there all the time and they are investigating and making inquiries all the time."
Inspector Aichinger said he had not seen a noticeable increase in crime due to the coronavirus shutdown, however he said it was nevertheless still at disconcertingly high levels.
He said there had been 137 people through Wagga Police Station's charge room in March, with 14 people being processed on Tuesday alone.
"Whilst charging is not the preferred option, unfortunately that's what's happening at the moment," he said.
