Police have warned cat owners to keep their animals indoors at night as an act of animal cruelty sparks an investigation.

About 10.45pm on Saturday, a resident of Cootamundra discovered their cat had returned home with a steel-jaw trap closed on its leg.
The use of such traps is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act.
In other news:
"(It's) an offence ... carrying heavy fines and/or a sentence of imprisonment," according to the Riverina Police District's facebook page.
"It is unknown whether the trap was set in a public place or on private property."
