Murrumbidgee is the first local health district in NSW to team up with the service to get visiting medical specialists into Wagga and Griffith.

The first flight landed at Wagga airport, on Tuesday delivering four clinicians to provide support to the team at MLHD.

On Wednesday morning, two mental health clinicians came in with the RFDS.

"The cancellation of domestic flights to regional centres became one of our biggest challenges," MLHD patient flow and transport manager Phil Major said.

"We needed to figure out how to secure consistent access to specialists for our region. Partnering with RFDS is a great solution to ensure we are still able to provide fly-in and fly-out services in our region. It means we can continue to have access to the specialist staff we need here on the ground."

At this stage, flights will arrive on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

David Charlton from the RFDS said his aeromedical team was happy to lend a hand.

"I've received so many messages of support from our staff, they are so excited to be able to support this initiative," he said.
