The first of AFL Riverina's competitions for the year was due to start on Saturday with the opening round of the Farrer League.

But all competitions are on hold to May 31, at least, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused a worldwide crisis.

Irons and AFL Southern NSW regional manager Marc Geppert conducted a phone hook up with all clubs this week to update them on the ongoing situation.

AFL Riverina has formed working parties for all senior and junior competitions that are expected to meet within the next week to assist in planning the 2020 season.

Irons said the best case scenario will be to have all competitions played this season.

"We're flexible. We'll look at all options to provide football and netball in some format for seniors and juniors this year, pending the government advice," Irons said.

"We will be open to all options but we also must be prepared not to get any football and netball either."

Irons will be joined by David Oehm, Rob Etchells, Matt Malone, Janine Fitzsimmons, Karen Conlan and Shane Whelan on the senior competition working party, overlooking the Farrer and Riverina competitions.

Phil Rowston and Travis Irvin will join Irons on the South West juniors working party, while he, Lindsay Geppert, Darren Wallett and Jacinta Murphy will form the Wagga and District juniors body.

Irons also revealed a number of other decisions made by the board. He confirmed the Southern NSW AFL Women's competition had been cancelled and no premiership awarded.

The remainder of the South West Youth Girls competition has also been cancelled.

Riverina League's representative clash against AFL Canberra has been cancelled, as has the junior representative program.

The implementation of the recommendations of the AFL Riverina Competition Review will be reviewed in coming months but at this stage the board hopes to continue with the current timelines.
