But this trip was for the best moment of his life after the Cronulla Sharks hooker's fiancee Kristy Heathcote gave birth to daughter Arabella Maree King on Tuesday.
The bundle of joy is the ideal self isolation companion for King as he continues his rehabilitation after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in a Sharks pre-season trial in Papua New Guinea.
"Yesterday we welcomed our precious baby girl into the world," King posted on Instagram.
"I've never felt a love like this in my life. I didn't know it was possible. Hands down the best day of my life. Mum and bub are doing great."
King has been ruled out for the season, another blow in a string of injuries which has restricted him to 43 NRL games since his debut in 2010.
He has used the first few weeks of rehab to post updates and tips on how to recover from an ACL tear.
"I just saw a few people going through what I was and if I could help people out (it's good)," he told Nine News.
He added he hasn't given up all hope of playing football this season, should a delayed NRL season get off the ground and run deep into the end of the year.
"It's a bit strange that could happen. the chance to play footy is always extra motivation so if that chance comes up and I'm ready to go I'd jump at it."
