Wagga's two golf courses closed on Monday, following advice from the sport's governing bodies in the wake of the latest recommendations from the Prime Minister.

Golf Australia and Golf NSW both advised all clubs to close until further notice due to the COVID-19 epidemic, a directive both Wagga Country Club and Wagga City Golf Club followed on Monday.

Wagga Country Club have kept some of its 20 staff on, mostly groundstaff in a bid to maintain the course.

Wagga Country Club secretary-manager John Turner is confident they will see the other side of the crisis.

"We're in a pretty strong position. What we've done over the last few years has put the club in a strong position," Turner said.

"We've got to be smart and do the right things but we'll be strong enough to survive this."

The latest restrictions put in place by the government has restricted outdoor gatherings to two persons or fewer.

While this left the door ajar for golf clubs, Turner said it was important to do the right thing in the current climate.

"We closed (on Monday). We've taken the advice from Golf Australia and Golf NSW," he explained.

"It's the responsible thing to do. We want to do the best thing by our members and we were keen to stay open as long as possible but they say to shut down so that's what we've done.

"This is unprecedented for Wagga, Australia and the world and we're all learning as we go."

Turner praised the introduction of the JobKeeper subsidies by the government and believes that will go a long way towards calming people in this uncertain time.

The Wagga Pro-Am has also been a casualty but the club hopes to hold the postponed event in spring.

Wagga City Golf Club management were unable to be reached but the course was closed on Tuesday.

The club issued a statement to members, explaining they were following advice from governing bodies.

"This decision is consistent with similar decisions being made in other states and territories, with regular communications also being provided by Golf Australia," the statement read.

"As of midnight on Monday, March 30, 2020, until further notice Wagga City Golf Club will be closed from playing. Further information will be communicated to members as it comes to hand."
