As the service prepares to head into flu season, coronavirus could put blood supply under pressure should existing donors become unavailable and regular donations become disrupted.
Shelly Park, the Chief Executive of Lifeblood - which runs blood banks around the country - said she wanted to reassure donors that there was no evidence coronavirus was transmittable by blood transfusion.
"Right now, we need more people booking appointments to donate ... The organisation has robust processes in place to ensure the safety of the blood supply and our donors, and we don't allow people who are unwell to donate blood," Ms Park said.
Those wanting to find out more about donating blood can visit lifeblood.com.au or call 13 14 95.
