A NSW Corrective Services spokesperson said the department was working with Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network and NSW Health to both prevent the spread of the virus and be prepared to manage any cases.
Inmates and staff have been encouraged to focus on their personal hygiene and seek help should they feel unwell.
The spokesperson said there were also "long-standing safety practices in place" for managing infectious diseases which could include protective equipment and frequent hand washing for staff and inmates along with restricting movements of affected inmates.
"All staff, inmates and visitors are being screened to identify those who've been overseas or had contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case in the past 14 days," the spokesperson said.
