We knew there were people - be they the elderly, sick or unemployed - in our community battling to maintain even a basic standard of living.
But it was only once we peeled back the veneer of prosperity covering this region and delved deeper into the issue that the magnitude of the problem became apparent.
It is abundantly clear that we, as a community, need to do more to identify and support those people who are falling through the cracks.
Mrs Magennis, who still lives at home, faced the real and terrifying prospect of having no one to hoist her out of bed each day when her care plan was abruptly terminated due to a lack of money.
We must do better.
Again, we must do better.
By giving a voice to people like Jean and Nicole we hope to bring about change. Change in our leaders' priorities, change in our institutions' effectiveness, change in our community's attitudes.
But we cannot do it without your help. So, if you or someone you know has fallen through the cracks, please let us know by emailing news@dailyadvertiser.com.au.
Together we can make a difference.
All the best for the week ahead,
Ross Tyson, editor
